What is Police Verification?
Police verification (also known as Kirayedar verification or tenant verification) is a process where the local police station verifies the identity and background of a person renting a property. This is a security measure required in major Pakistani cities to maintain a record of residents and help prevent criminal activities.
Why is it Important?
- Required by law in many cities (especially Punjab and ICT)
- Provides security for the landlord and community
- Creates an official record of tenancy
- Helps law enforcement track residents
- May be required for certain government services
The Verification Process
- Obtain the Form: Get the tenant verification form (Kirayedar Form) from the local police station or download it from the relevant police website
- Fill in Details: Both landlord and tenant fill in their details including CNIC numbers, address, and property information
- Gather Documents: Prepare copies of required documents (see below)
- Submit to Police Station: Submit the form with documents to the local police station (thana)
- Verification Visit: A police officer may visit the property for physical verification
- Certificate Issued: Upon successful verification, a certificate is issued
Required Documents
- Tenant verification form (completed and signed)
- Copy of rent agreement
- Tenant's CNIC (original + copy)
- Landlord's CNIC (original + copy)
- Property ownership proof (utility bill or property documents)
- Passport-size photographs of the tenant
How Long Does it Take?
The verification process typically takes 3-7 working days. In some areas with digital systems (e.g., Punjab Safe Cities), the process may be faster.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
In Punjab, failing to register tenants can result in fines for landlords. The Punjab Rented Premises Act mandates tenant verification, and non-compliance can lead to legal consequences.
